Our Thanksgiving Tradition

OPEN Carnival!!! Simply comment here with a link to your post about Kids and Thanksgiving. It could be crafts, traditions, tips or anything you wish!

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.

First - I like Thanksgiving because it is all about being at home with family. A lot of other holidays - New Years, Halloween, 4th of July we spend at other places, but Thanksgiving is always "home".

Each year, I let my boys make their "What I am thankful for" list. They will usually start about a week before and add to it as the days get closer. I try to get them to commit to at least one item per day.

It all starts with construction paper...

Each page is dedicated to one 'thankful thing'....I encourage them to not only write it down, but to also use a picture or even a story to detail what and why they are thankful for that thing. Then I will let them even have free reign of the camera and get their own pictures to use in their pages. Yes, we end up with a lot of pictures like this:

?????

I know it is fun for them to have camera control! I once thought about starting a blog with only pictures that my kids take....I mean, sometimes the stuff they capture amazes me! Even more than the pictures are the stories behind them!

My oldest (he's 7) took this picture of a cross in our yard, he said it still looks good no matter how far or close you are to it.

He said it is just like his cousin, Meagan (she died in a car accident earlier this year), no matter how far or close she is to us, she still looks good! Great lesson from a kid, huh?

Anyways, the camera thing encourages them to get creative, and makes it so much more personal. By the time Thanksgiving Eve gets here, they will have lots of pages put together in varying colors with pictures, drawings and stories all about the things they are thankful for. We use Thanksgiving 'Eve' to put together our books using either ribbon, glue, fasteners or plain old file folders.

My boys will each make a cover page that says....

"Thanksgiving 2007"
What I am Thankful for...

Then we take a picture each child while holding their book and attach the picture to the cover. The next day they are glowing while showing off their books to our big family! Each year we save the books and start our new one by looking back at the year before. It is funny to see how they grow and change year to year.

I imagine holding on to these until my boys become fathers, and then giving it to them to start their own Thanksgiving Family tradition! I know that in my family following tradition is important, but making your own is even better!

Not a Turkey Craft

You see there are a ton of turkey crafts out there to get your kids excited about Thanksgiving, but not much else...then I found these cute little guys. A Little Native American family!

1. Cut cardboard tubes in various heights.
2. Cover tubes with skin-toned construction paper.
3. Dress your figures with bands of colored paper & glue together.
4. To create hair for each figure, cut a small paper rectangle in shades of brown and black. Make many narrow cuts on one side of the strip to create strands of hair, leaving the top part of the band untouched. Roll the bottom of the hair around a pencil to make curls. Glue together.
5. Cut and decorate headbands with feathers. Glue in place over figure.
6. Draw on face and other details.

What to do with all this Halloween candy?!

Each year, we are faced with the challenge of sifting through bags of candy and convincing our kids there are better things to do with it than sit down and pig out on it all! Here are some of the ideas we have used in the past.

1 - Recycle it! We allow each child to fill a small ziploc with their favorites. The rest goes into my oldest sons pinata at his birthday party (only 3 weeks after Halloween).

2 - Build with it! Christmas is only a few weeks after Halloween. Save the appropriate candies for your holiday gingerbread house.

3 - Bake it! One cool surprise we've done is baking surprise cupcakes for Thanksgiving (or anytime). Simply fill cupcake tins with a little less batter than usual and then push a few M&M's, Rolos, Snikers or any "meltable" candy in the center. Each one will be a surprise! (this is a great idea for treats for your child's class, too). You can also freeze things like 3 Musketeers and the use a grater to sprinkle on top of the cupcake icing! YUM!

4 - Get creative! While this may not work with chocolate, you can "make" things out of hard candies. Picture frames, Christmas ornaments and such. Just make sure you seal it with something so the critters (like ants) don't start feasting on your creation.

5- Share it! Get creative and turn a plain old milk jug (or any old container) into something fun! Let your kids decorate it and fill it with the good stuff. Bring it to your local nursing home, homeless shelter, charity or school for the staff to enjoy. Attach a card that says: The ______ family thanks you for all you do!

Finished Product - Headless Soccer Player

Well, we finally finished the costume just in time for Halloween!

It was not too bad making the neck, I found a tan cowboy hat in the craft section of Wal-mart and it worked perfectly! We added the fake blood and it was a hit!

Make your own Hannah Montana Costume

If you have a young girl looking for the "it" Halloween costume this year, you probably are searching for Hannah Montana .

The most searched-for costume, according to Internet monitor Hitwise, is Disney star Hannah Montana. The Disney series focuses on Miley Stewart (played by Miley Cyrus), who lives a double life as an average teenage girl at school during the day and a famous pop singer, Hannah Montana, at night, concealing her 'real' identity from the public (other than her close friends and family).

While places that carried the 'official' costume like Target sold out pretty quickly, you could still snag one on eBay....

Since we are now only 2 days away, why not just make your own Hannah Montana costume?
All you need is some glittery type top with a cropped jacket, a skirt or jeans, big belt, lots of bracelets, cowboy style boots and the final key is the hair! It's gotta be long, gotta be blonde and it's gotta have bangs!

Just make sure if you got the Hannah Montana Boots at Payless - they are not the ones that were recalled! Here is a picture of the recalled boots:

Simply search the millions of pictures online for your favorite Hannah outfit and duplicate it!

Last Minute Halloween Costumes

After a little research, this is the list that I would let my own kids wear!

R2D2

The last-minute SCI-FI classic costume. Just get one of those trash cans with the rounded dome top and the big flap on the front. You can use permanent marker to draw buttons and lights. Put it over your head and climb inside,(cut out the bottom) bring along your cell phone and start dialing to make those audible "beeps" and "boops."

The Farmer
Super easy - all you need are blue jean overalls, plaid shirt, straw hat & a bandanna!

"Smarty" Pants
As silly as this is, I think it is totally cute! Attach Smarties Candies to black pants with clear packing tape!

Ghost
What is better than the traditional ghost! Get a white sheet and cut out the eyeholes.

Static Cling
Wear sold black (or white) and attach small items like socks with safety pins.

Grapes
Here is one that is so simple yet such a hit! Wear purple (or green) solid sweat clothes. Attach blown up purple (or green) balloons all over!

Dresser
Use cardboard to create a 3-drawer dresser, hang a sock out of one drawer, a shirt out of another. Attach things to the top like picture frames, a book, etc. *Wal-mart sells these "cardboard dressers" if you aren't feeling too creative!

Headless Soccer Player Costume

My 7 year old decided that he wanted to "make" his costume for Halloween this year. This is a child who has been Spider man for the past 4 years. This is his first year being something really scary and he wanted to go all out! So, being the crafty mom I am, I thought, GREAT! this is going to be fun!

We started this project about a week ago.

Headless Soccer Player.

It was a little more involved than we initially thought. You see he is wearing a backpack with tall tubes attached and lots of padding. We tried so many combinations of materials to get it right. I think it is the tubing with t-shirt like rags wrapped around to make it appear larger & cardboard to shape it.

We must have made him put it on & take it off about 50 times to get it the right "height".

Balled up newspaper in the sleeves and gloves, gloves pinned to shirt. We are working on a solution for his real arms....if he lets them hang down, they will show. I am not sure what will be comfortable for him to "hold" his arms up under the shirt.

There is one other small problem - we need to make a neck. AND we need to fix it on there somehow with lots of "blood". We'll post an updated pic when it is 100% complete. HERE is the UPDATE!

How many more days till Halloween???

GPS in your jacket

Keeping tabs on where their kids are has always been an issue between kids and their parents.

Technology is allowing parents to keep an exact track of their child with GPS inside of a jacket. Parents can get the tracking information by email or phone (with 10 second updates) and even program the jacket and set specific boundaries for their child. The jacket includes slash resistant lining to avoid an eager child trying to "dismantle" the feature.

Now if only they could make something to assure the child will actually wear the thing! The real advantage is this is one jacket you will never loose!

The BladeRunner GPS jacket is currently only available in the U.K., with no information regarding U.S. availability.

Kid Nation Re-Cap

After almost 20 whole days, the trash problem in Bonanza has to be dealt with. Town Council picks kids who will have the pleasure of shoveling all the trash, hauling it to the outskirts of town, and digging a hole to bury it. Even though most of the kids are handling this chore pretty well, Taylor decides she doesn't like trash or getting dirty.

The showdown featured 1600 pounds of baked beans! That is exactly what the kids had to dive into and find their team's colored cans. Well, beans and a few dozen pigs! Newly elected town council member, Guylan lead the red team to Upper Class, the green team became Merchants, the yellow team remained Cooks and the blue team slipped down to Laborers (for the first time!).

The council chose the unlimited supply of fruits and veggies over the 2 dune buggies and DK got the gold star.

Master Chief Halo 3 costume

The number one costume for boys searched online this Halloween is Master Chief. The ironic thing is that the majority of the search results are homemade costumes, not available in stores.

Master Chief is a character from the popular Xbox game Halo. After searching for quite some time, I simply could not locate a store that carried this costume. If you are interested in dressing as Master Chief and don't want to make the costume yourself, your best option at this point will be buying a homemade version online.

With only a few days left to decide what your costume will be, you could just gather some cardboard, heavy duty glue and spray paint to make your own Master Chief.
